- 1930 - Clyde Tombaugh discovers Pluto using images taken the previous month. He was an American astronomer and also discovered many asteroids.
- 1978 – The first Iron Man Triathlon, twelve people completed the race and the winner was Gordon Haller and given the Iron Man title.
- 1979 – Snow falls in several places in the Sahara Desert. There was a 30 minute snow shower resulting in traffic stopping, it was said this has never happened in living memory. Although on January 18th 2012 snow fell in Western Algeria.

- 1516 – Mary I Tudor was born in Greenwich, England. She was became the Queen of England reining from 1553 to 1558. She died from possible influenza as there was an outbreak at this time.
- 1933 – Yoko Ono was born in Tokyo, Japan. She became famous for her marriage to John Lennon and she pursued philanthropic activities, alongside art, music and film-making.
- 1954 - John Travolta was born in Englewood, New Jersey. He became an actor and has starred in many films from Grease to Pulp Fiction, he has won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe.
