- 1893 - The first movie was a close-up of a sneeze, it was filmed in Edison studio, West Orange, New Jersey.
- 1922 – James Joyce’s novel Ulysses was published in Paris with 1,000 copies to coincide with his deadline, his Birthday. It was censored in the US for obscenity; it did not appear there until 1933.
- 1933 – Two days after becoming chancellor of Germany, Adolf Hitler dissolves Parliament to form a single party dictatorship based on the totalitarian and autocratic ideals of Nazism.

- 1650 – Nell Eleanor Gwyn was born in England although her early life is a little obscure. She became an actress and was the mistress of King Charles II who fathered her two sons.
- 1947 – Mary Farrah Leni Fawcett was born in Corpus Christi, Texas. She became a well known actress particularly for playing Jill Munroe in Charlie’s Angels.
- 1955 – Brent Spiner was born in Houston, Texas. He became well known as an actor for playing Data in Star Trek the Next Generation and he also played the scientist in Independence Day.
