- 1968 – Apollo 7 landed safely home in the North Atlantic Ocean. The crew of 3 returned after nearly 11 days in which they completed 163 orbits of Earth. It was the first manned mission of the Apollo space programme.
- 1987 – Russian poet and essayist Iosif Aleksandrovich Brodsky was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
- 2008 – The Indian Space Research Organisation launched Chandrayaan-1 from Sriharikota. It was Indias first unmanned space mission and it managed to complete 3400 lunar orbits.
