Events

  • 1549-  The city of Salvador da Bahia became the first capital of Brazil, it changed in 1763 to Rio De Janeiro. It was named by the Portuguese and was the main port for the sugar and slave industry.
  • 1871 – The Royal Albert Hall is opened by Queen Victoria. It was originally to be called The Central Hall of Arts and Science, however it was changed in dedication to Queen Victoria’s late husband.
  • 1974 – NASA’s Mariner 10 becomes the first space probe to fly by Mercury. It was launched on 3rd November 1973, its mission was to measure environment, atmosphere, surface and body characteristics, it was to apply the same to Venus on the same mission.

  • 1931 – Norman Tebbit was born in Potters End, UK. He became a politician and a member of the conservative party, he has served in the cabinet under varying titles.
  • 1943 – Eric Idle was born in County Durham, UK. He became an actor, writer, and composer, he is famed for being part the Monty Python team of surreal comedians.
  • 1943 – Sir John Major was born in Carshalton, UK. He became a politician and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in 1990 to 1997.

  • 1908 - New York to Paris auto race, also known as the Great Race begins in New York. The winner George Schuster arrives in Paris on 30th July 1908 in his car The Flyer.
  • 1961 – USSR launches Venera 1 for a fly-by mission of Venus, it was the first planetary probe by the Soviet Union.
  • 1984 – Jayne Torvill & Christopher Dean win the Olympic Gold medal for their ice skating routine “Bolero”, they received perfect scores.

  • 1809 – Charles Darwin was born in Shrewsbury, England. He became a naturalist and proposed the scientific theory of evolution and published the Origin of species.
  • 1809 – Abraham Lincoln was born in Hodgenville, Kentucky. He became the 16th President of the United States from 1861 to 1865.
  • 1967 – Stephen Baldwin was born in New York. He became an actor and is known for his role as William Cody in The Young Riders.

  • 1970 – The first successful landing on Venus was performed by the former USSR.
